Just as Luke Skywalker had a too-close flirtation with the dark side (in truth, a disastrous ruse to defeat the Sith from within their ranks), Rey might adopt a similar strategy, feeling outclassed by the reborn Emperor Palpatine.

A dark side-corrupted Rey would also bring The Rise of Skywalker even closer to the Legends-era story that inspired it: Dark Empire.
